Undergraduate Degrees and Certificates

The Department of South Asia Studies (SAST) offers a 12-credit Major and a 6-credit Minor. Undergraduates may also choose to pursue a Language Certificate in Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, or Urdu. The Language Certificate is intended to encourage advanced language study in topics such as literature, culture, and media. For more information, visit SAST Undergraduate Programs.

 

Undergraduate Awards, Fellowships & Summer Research Grants

The Holden Furber Prize is awarded annually for the best undergraduate essay on any topic related to South Asia.  The award will be for $300 and competition is open to all students of the University of Pennsylvania. 

The Department of South Asia Studies offers $2500 travel grants for undergraduates to conduct research in South Asia over the summer.  For more information, please visit the SAST website.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are available for undergraduate students to study South Asian languages during the summer and academic year.  The FLAS competition is open to US citizens and permanent residents studying at the intermediate level or higher during the fellowship year.  For more information, please visit the FLAS website
