Welcome

The University of Pennsylvania has three separate units on campus devoted to the study of South Asia, with a fourth unit on-site in India.  The Department of South Asia Studies is an academic teaching unit, offering courses in modern and pre-modern histories, cultures, languages, and literatures of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.  The South Asia Center supports curricular development, research, language study, and the expansion of intellectual engagement with South Asia across the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM fields, and Penn’s professional schools and within the wider community, and has served as a designated National Resource Center since 1955.  The Center for the Advanced Study of India brings together academic, business, and policy communities to provide in-depth, policy-relevant analysis of the most pressing issues facing contemporary India and the Indo-US relationship today.  The University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI) is a non-profit research center located in New Delhi.
